3 Tips for Properly Securing Your Computer Server

When it comes to your servers, security is no joke. A breach can have a range of impacts on your business: from the mere cost of replacement (although this usually isn’t cheap), to your whole business going under. In order to avoid nightmares like these, it pays to make strong investments into your server security.

While we encourage a holistic approach to your business security by considering all possible risks, we recommend the following three lines of defense as a basic strategy to keep your servers safe.

First Line of Defense: The Perimeter

If your server equipment is not kept together in one area, this may not necessarily apply. However, if you do have consolidated server space, the first thing you can do is limit access to this area by having sturdy doors that you can lock. For your locking system, you can use a traditional lock and key system, a keypad, keycards, or even biometric identification systems. Anything is better than open access. A metal door and door frame can also go a long way. Finally, consider using an alarm system to alert you of any unwanted entries.

Second Line of Defense: The Rack

Every rack that contains server equipment is both an asset and a liability. To help protect these assets, it is wise to invest in lockable server racks such as the 12U LINIER Fixed Wall Mount Cabinet with Vented Door. While a traditional lock and key system may suffice for your racks when you have secured the perimeter of the server room, these racks can also be modified to accommodate other locking techniques. When it comes to equipment theft, a quality rack can be what saves you from losing valuable equipment.

Third Line of Defense: Your Ports

While your server equipment is certainly valuable, sometimes the data they contain can be worth much, much more than the equipment itself. Sometimes, just a small investment like the Black Box LockPORT Secure Port Locks can deter data theft by making it more difficult for intruders to upload data using a USB storage device. For cases when an intruder is after your data, products like this are part of your last lines of defense.
