For When Space is At a Premium

The Kendall Howard V-Rack allows users to mount servers or other rack-mountable devices, regardless of depth, either vertically or horizontally. It can be mounted to a wall, a table, or a desk. The 4U V-Rack sticks out less than 4” from the wall or mounting point.

Cage Nut Style vs Tapped Rails

The product linked above comes with cage nut style rails, however Kendall Howard also offers the same product with tapped rails. But, what is the difference?

Cage nut style rails are exactly what they sound like. A rectangular cut out is made in the metal to allow the use of cage nuts. Tapped rails, on the other hand, have the threading for hardware made directly into the rack itself. Cage nut style rails are designed as a bit more of a long term workhorse than their tapped rail counterparts, whereas tapped rails are frequently utilized for their ease of installation. Since less hardware is involved, mounting rack equipment with tapped rails can save you time. However, a larger issue can arise if the threading is to ever strip. Cage nut style rails avoid this issue since you can simply swap out the cage nut and install a new one if stripping does occur. Tapped rails are suggested for mounting tasks that will remain fixed once mounted so as to avoid the stripping issue entirely.

Both styles of rails have their place in the IT industry, it just depends on the way you intend to use the product. The tapped rail version of this product is compatible with your standard 10-32 screw and includes 12 in the packaging. Simply set the screws and you’re done!
