4 Reasons Zinc Rack Screws Are Best For Server Racks

Jun 1st 2023

Many non-tech companies don’t think about the impact their server room can have on a quality internet experience. A good server room starts with a good server rack, and that starts with the right rack screws.

There are rack screws available in many different sizes and materials. But, zinc is the industry standard. Today, we’ll explore four reasons why zinc rack screws are the best choice for server racks.

Rack Mount Screws: Why Zinc?

Zinc is the best choice for rack mount screws for four reasons.

1. Durability

Rack screws will support server racks, which provide essential support to your server architecture. So, having durable screws to shoulder your server’s weight is essential, and Zinc is an incredibly durable metal to use. With zinc rack screws, you don’t have to worry about them easily stripping or breaking.

2. Rust and Corrosion Resistance

Zinc possesses a high resistance to rust and corrosion. These resistances are invaluable in keeping the screw’s strength and ongoing durability, especially in an indoor server room setting. Rather than risk your company’s servers physically and electronically crashing, invest in rust and corrosion-resistant zinc rack screws.

3. Maintaining an Optimal Server Rack Set-Up

Not all racking methods are as optimal as others. A sub-par system can lead to hotter servers, which are slower, more inefficient servers. This can also contribute to an inefficient use of space and increased energy usage.

Screw-in fixed shelves are a central component of an optimal server rack set-up. This should support more customization, faster installation, and a better and overall cheaper fit. Quality zinc screws will reduce the risk of a rack sticking or breaking, and contribute to the smooth general operation of the server room.

4. Price

Zinc is a common metal (the 24th most common in the Earth’s crust). And practically speaking, it’s an inexpensive one too. This is especially true compared to other possible materials, like stainless steel or aluminum. On top of their material strengths, this makes them an ideal material for rack screws. So buying packs of them in bulk is an extremely economical purchase.

Rack Screw Size: What You Need to Know

Finding the right rack screw size is the difference between a stable server rack and a rickety one. Unfortunately, there isn’t a standardized size for rack screws. However, there are three commonly-used sizes: 10-32, 12-24, and M6 screws.

10-32 Screws

In 1974, the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) set the dimensions for what came to be called 10-32 screws. The number 10 is used for sizing and 32 for the number of threads per inch on the screw. In addition, you can identify a 10-32 screw by measuring the diameter with a ruler (it’s exactly 3/16 of an inch).

12-24 Screws

12-24 screws are slightly larger than 10-32, commonly seen in pre-threaded racks. Plus, the fasteners are slightly larger and the threads are coarser than the 10-32. The 12 is used for sizing, and it has 24 threads per inch. A 12-24 screw’s diameter should be slightly less than 7/32 inches (or 5.6 mm).

M6 Screws

M6 threads are 6mm metric screws. “M,” in this case, stands for metric, and the number for the diameter in millimeters. These are used most commonly outside the U.S., especially by global entities and companies like HP. As the name suggests, the screw’s diameter should measure 6 mm, or slightly more than 7/32 inches (0.228”).
