What are the Different Types of Rack Screw Sizes?

To start, there is the 10-32 rack screw, also known as the “original rack screw.” This is the most common variant and is utilized with most American server racks. The “10” refers to its size, with a diameter of 3/16”, or 4.8mm. “32” indicates the number of threads per inch. 

The following type of rack screw is the 12-24. It is a bit larger, with a diameter of 7/32”, or 5.6mm. Interestingly, the 12-24 rack screw features fewer threads per inch despite being larger. Typically, this type of rack screw is best used for pre-threaded mounting racks. 

Next, there is the M6 rack screw. This type of rack screw was created in Europe. With a diameter of 6mm, it is the largest fastener. While it is mostly used internationally, HP server racks use this variant of fastener.

Finally, the M5 rack screw is available, although it is not as popular as its counterparts. This has a diameter of 5mm.
