With an ever-evolving workplace, it is important to prioritize data storage and information. Oftentimes, this involves installing and maintaining a server rack. In order to do so, it’s important to invest in high-quality rack screws. Yes, these seemingly insignificant accessories can greatly impact the long-term durability of your server rack. Furthermore, with better rack screws, you can attach and modify components with ease.

In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about high-quality rack screws. Additionally, we are including guidelines for buying these vital components.

Different Types of Rack Screw Sizes

  • To start, let’s discuss the different types of rack screw sizes. Since these fasteners are of utmost importance in the installation process, it is important to use the exact right size.

  • First, there is the 10-32 rack screw. Typically, referred to as the “original” rack screw, this is the most common type of fastener. Most U.S.-manufactured server racks will utilize the 10-32 screw. For those unaware, “10” indicates the size, with a diameter of 3/16”. “32” refers to the thread count - 32 threads per inch.

  • Certain server racks will require the 12-24 rack screw. This is a slightly larger screw, with a diameter of 7/32”. However, despite being larger, it features less threads per inch - only 24. These types of rack screws are often used outside of North America.

  • Finally, there is the M6 rack screw. Unlike the American rack screws which use Imperial measurements, this variation utilizes the Metric system. It is the largest rack screw, with a diameter of 6mm. While this isn’t as common, certain companies such as HP require this type of rack screw.

Now that you understand the different types of rack screw sizes, you can make a more informed purchasing decision, based on your exact needs.

How to Buy the Right Rack Mount Cage Nuts

Depending on your server rack, there may not be enough threaded holes. Understandably, this can cause issues as you would not be able to attach additional components.

Fortunately, there is a safe and easy solution: cage nuts. These are steel fasteners that provide increased support and stability to server rack components. Moreover, they are easy to install with minimal tools required. In fact, many cage nuts have a snap-on installation. In other words, all you need to do is to align your cage nut and press.

Similar to rack screws, there are different variations of cage nuts, each having their own benefits.

  • To start, there is the standard type. This type of cage nut features two upward facing curves. When installed properly, they will snap into place. This allows for quick installation and removal.

  • Next, there is the J-Type. Unlike the standard type, this type of cage nut does not protrude outward. Instead, it folds halfway under itself, resembling the letter “J”. As a result, the J-Type cage nut offers self-retainment and full alignment.

  • Finally, there is the U-Type. Similar to the J-Type, this cage nut folds underneath itself. However, the U-Type folds fully underneath itself. In turn, this provides increased support and stability. This type of cage nut is best used for heavier server rack components.
