Mar 10th 2023

In the modern workplace, technology is becoming all the more present in our office lives. It seems as if our hands and eyes are constantly glued to some form of screen or smart device. However, have you ever considered the importance of rack screws? Many people have never heard of rack screws or the purpose they serve.

Rack screws are used to attach equipment to the uprights of a 19” rack. While they may seem insignificant, they actually play an important part in ensuring workplace efficiency and productivity.

In this article, we will discuss the importance of rack screws and why you should know the correct one for your office.

What Should I Know About Cage Nuts?

If you are using a rack with square-mounted holes, you may need to use cage nuts. Using cage nuts, you will be able to insert threaded screws. While they can be installed by hand, insertion tools can make the process easier.

There are three different sizes of cage nuts: 10-32, 12-24, and M6. Depending on your setup, you may have to use a particular size. It is very important that you choose the correct cage nut, as with the wrong size, installation can become increasingly difficult.

The 10-32

This is considered the “original” size of the cage nut. It has a diameter of 3/16.” There are 32 threads per inch with this screw.

The 12-24

This is a slightly larger option. It has a diameter of 7/32.” While there is a bigger diameter, there are only 24 threads per inch.

The M6

This is a 6mm metric screw. It has 1 thread per millimeter.

What Should I Know About Server Racks?

Typically, cage nuts and other rack screws will be used on server racks. Therefore, it is important to understand what they are and how beneficial they are to the workplace.

What Are Server Racks?

Server racks are used for the storage and usage of technological equipment. This could be routers, servers, boards, and switches. With them, you will be able to hold data for you or your client. The most common type of rack is a 19-inch server rack. This refers to the size of the mountable widths on the servers. For most server rooms, the racks will be enclosed.

Server Racks Have Varying Heights

There are common heights for racks. For example, there are 42U, 45U, and 48U. The “U” refers to a rack unit, a unit of measurement used for server racks and the equipment mounted to them. One rack unit is 1.75 inches or has three threaded holes.

Doors for Ventilation

Server racks have doors that ensure front-to-back airflow and ventilation. There are also side panels, which further assist with cooling and ventilation. It’s important to note how essential it is that you have proper cooling. Without this, your server rack may overheat, which could cause damage. In addition to this, cable management is also important when it comes to airflow.

Maintaining Security

Understandably, security is of paramount importance. This doesn’t just mean locking the doors of your server room. You may want to install a key card lock or a digit code. Since they hold such valuable data, maintaining proper server rack security is essential.
